The most iconic recipe to prepare Mexican tamales

You may have the craving to prepare and taste the best traditional food brought from the heart of a Mexican mother, the tamales. However, to prepare this delicious dish, you have to know its ingredients and how you should do it. Following a couple of steps, you can eat this amazing breakfast or even a traditional lunch at home.

This preparation process can take around 40 minutes, while cooking could take up to 2 hours. For you to make delicious tamales, you need:


  • 1 boneless chicken breast.
  • 1 pinch of salt.
  • 1 pinch of ground pepper.
  • 1 container with chicken broth
  • 250 grams of lard
  • 300 grams of onion.
  • 3 oil tablespoons.
  • 500 grams of flour, preferably to make tamales.
  • Water
  • Half a kilo of green tomatoes.
  • Garlic.
  • Corn husks, the amount will depend on the number of tamales you will make.
  • Serrano peppers are an option to spice up the tamale.

You will find most ingredients in the store closest to the home. You have to invest a little of your money. With the ingredients in hand, you have to follow these steps for the preparation:

Step by step

Step 1: You must smooth the butter with the mixer for over five minutes.

Step 2: You must place the flour for the tamale in a cup and combine it with the chicken broth in a small measure. In this step, you must be careful, so the flour is not watery or too hard due to the absence of broth.

Step 3: Now, place the butter inside the dough or vice versa and mix it. In this mixing process, you can also include the baking powder, the pinch of salt, and pepper. You should not overdo the doses of these condiments.

Step 4: To combine perfectly, add the water, so the dough is easy. Simultaneously, place the mixture over low heat while you include tomatoes, onion, and minced garlic. All these accessories are to taste.

Step 5: The mixture should be in the kitchen for over 10 minutes until you see that the water almost evaporates. The mixture should be clean, without lumps.

Step 6: When you feel that the mixture is well cooked, open the leaves and place them in small portions. In this step, also add the freshly cooked chicken and sauces to taste.

Step 7: now, you have to close the corn husk and tie it with a piece of string or wick.

Step 8: with a good quantity of tamales ready, you have to place them in a pot of water on top of the kitchen. You must cook the tamales for almost two hours over medium heat, so they are ready.
